    Hi guys/girls
Newbie here with my first post. Just bought my first BMW a 1 series 68 plate sport manual. Have to say am delighted with the car but finding a few difficulties which might be my driving style? Changing gear is a bit of challenge in actually getting the gear stick to go into gear, I’m having to really push the stick hard to get it in. It seems easier going up the gears but slowing down at junctions and roundabouts it’s quite difficult, Is this normal? Also getting into reverse the stick needs a serious push. Would appreciate any help or thoughts?

    Hi Wullz,

Congratulations on you purchase I'm sure you'll be delighted with your car, what cars have you driven before, my experience with BMW manual boxes are that they are very strong boxes but need a firmer hand than some, the reverse spring is pretty strong and it needs a decent shove to get it in.

You soon get used to it..

    Cheers

    Hi mate
My last car was an Audi A3, I’ve also had an VX Astra 1.6 turbo. Am glad to hear you say the gear boxes are strong as I was beginning to think there was a fault with the gear box or clutch? I guess your right, it’s just a case of getting used to it and some patience. I’ve also stalled it a few times pulling away at junctions, I think because am fighting to get it into gear I might be over/under revving it?
    Cheers mate

    No Probs,

Audi boxes are fingertip light IMO - the BMW one will take some getting used to...I find firm and deliberate does the trick, the clutches can feel wierd if your not used to them as there is a clutch delay valve fitted.

I have had several BMW manuals and am now conpletely used to all this so find other boxes feel a bit toy like in comparison...
