I used Morris Oil 's Superclean Morrendo DD on my diesel Golf. That car is still going strong at 200k miles. But I've been reluctant to use it on the 330d because I'm not sure that it would be suitable. Instead I'll probably use the BMW additive, when it's required.

I have used millers for almost all my miles on the current steed. I won’t comment on whether it actually improves mileage consumption for the simple reason I’m unsure as to what if any benefit. However I will say it gets rid of noticeable diesel knock and the car runs appreciably smoother. Last year I had the intake manifold etc off to change glow plugs and the controller and I was really pleased at the lack of soot anywhere in the system. On the previous car I had the dreaded swirl flap failure at under 100k and with the amount of crap that was in the manifold no wonder they failed. This car has over twice that mileage (250k). Operating conditions for both would have been similar, and engine not wildly different 530d to a 535d. Only caveat may be previous history prior to my ownership. Whether millers has any hand in that would be a leap of faith too far for serious debate as it is purely anecdotal but I will certainly be using it just in case.

I did look at Archoil some considerable time ago and cannot remember why I decided to stick with millers. When I get a bit of free time I must kick the cobwebs off the memory bank.

By the by any further conclusions on your strange oil temp findings. A couple of years ago my thermostats went and I did a few runs with an eye on coolant temp. One thing that surprised me was that at normal motorway speeds the engine was under little load so temps would drop right off. The only time substantial heat was generated was prolonged throttle up not insignificant gradients. The other thing I concluded was the radiators work better at typical motorway speed than say 20-30 mph slower (not really surprising)

I stopped using Millers or any other similar fuel additive as they all stink to high heaven - and if you get any on your hands it's a palaver involving several washings to get rid of the smell.

But I keep a tin of the BMW diesel additive in the boot for when I'm in far-flung parts of Europe where the quality is dubious.

However i do use the cheapest basic mineral low-ash 2-stroke oil on a regular basis.

    I use a 1:200 ration so 250ml with 50l of diesel.

It's also possible to use a non-synthetic ATF fluid - an old trucker's fix to quieten a diesel engine - again a 1:200 mix.

I use Comma it's green and get it from CES but any will do as long as it's mineral and not synthetic.
Put mine into small plastic bottles and keep in the boot 200ml i think they are got them from that auction site we all know.

The cheapest is the best - definitely don't buy the top of the range stuff with extra additives from Shell, Castrol or such.

I get mine from good old Halfords - £5.99 a litre or £4.79 if you have a Tradecard.

Low ash - non synthetic - the same stuff one mixes with petrol for Flymo lawn-mowers and the like.

The cheapest Auto Transmission Fluid (ATF) is a good alternative if no 2-stroke is available.

This is the first I've heard 2 stroke oil being used, as opposed to normal additives. Do you use it each time the tank is filled, or less frequently?

I add 2-stroke to every fill up.

I've been doing this on diesels since 1998.

Lots of discussion about it on most diesel forums including M-Benz and LandRover.

There are some (a very few) who say "No" due to exhaust emissions and/or DPF worries but no-one can come up with any hard proof that there is any adverse effects, even over high mileages.

My advice would be to try it for a couple of fill ups and see if you can detect any difference in noise - it's especially obvious to me on tick-over.

Yes there are varying reports - some good - and some prophesying all manner of problems.

I was pleased to see that the SA report in your link said there were no problems with emissions.

My M47 engine had 2-stroke all it's life with no DPF problems ever.

When I had the injectors out at approx 140K miles they were clean as a whistle so I just screwed them back in them and eventually sold the car at over 160K when it was still quiet, pulling hard, and giving decent mpg,
