Fast road conversions Ashford Could not recommend these guys enough ! Turned up this morning explained the problem and they sorted it in no time Booked my self in for a custom exhaust system in the new year too, to get rid of that poor excuse of a BMW exhaust Obligatory Car Pic
A flexible coupling which connects the exhaust to the exhaust manifold. Afaik not all models have one.
It's a flexable connector on the exhaust that allows movement of the system when the engine is running stopping it from slapping the underside of the car. You can tell if it's gone usually because of a rattle, increase exhaust noise and fumes in the cabin. But in my case it just fell apart and I could hear and feel it vibrate under the car.
It's a common problem for BMWs ( well diesels mostly) also if it's connected to your catalytic converter don't be duped by BMW to replace the whole unit. !!
thanks, @OHP I'll keep an eye out, my car is still in warranty until early next year so will see how it goes from there. My does occasionally have some weird behaviour but its not frequent enough that I've booked it in. It seems IF i need to move quickly, light today, turning right at the lights, i saw a gap and hit the go pedal to take the turning in sufficient time but not foot to the floor as was another set of traffic lights about 10 car lengths away. After that, just pushing the go pedal slightly (in stop/start traffic) to gentle move off, you can hear the exhaust. It continues to do this until car is turned off. Turn it back on and exhaust is barely heard again, very odd. As i say it doesn't always do it so unsure what that is. Will have to keep an eye on it, normally i'm not pushing the go pedal hard from stationary i just let the car pick up speed gradually. Kev
My flexi joint went on my old car but I elected to replace the whole dpf unit as that had reached end of life.
I think they may only be fitted to diesels, i've had 3 petrol bmw's in recent recent years and none have had the flexi joint although i know my E60 535d had one
