Morning All Glad to see the site is growing, I was a member of the original BMWland about 7 years ago when I had my e60.....sadly had to sell due to baby no4! Mama her to find BMWlander a couple of years ago but haven’t been on since so struggled to find the site. As I’m moving company in the next week or so I’m back in the market for a BMW, only thing is I can’t decide between a X5 (7seater) or F10 530d. My budget is 20k. Looking for advice on the running costs of an x5. My daily commute will be from Guildford to Heathrow approximately 45mile round trip. I’m pretty sure the 530d costs will be roughly the same as my e60 maybe a little better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Welcome back aboard, SL I can't help with your dilemma, but I'm sure others who have/have had these models will be along to advise soon. Good luck in the new job.
Morning Alan, I’m intrigued to hear what MPG figures your getting, my budget is only going to reach to a 10/12 plate x5, whereas the I could get a 14/15 plate 530d which the cleaner more effiecnt engine update
X5 is very capable vehicle but it doesn't get the fuel consumption of the 530d. With 4 kids though I would go for the X5 for the practicality. Your back will thank you when loading kids into child seats etc. 4 wheel drives need the tyres changed together so budget £1k every couple of years as they eat tyres if you are lead footed. Great cars - I went for the X3 only because my kids are grown and I zipped my pants after 2 LOL
Hi kleynie, I haven’t to be honest, I considered changing my e60 for one about 5 years ago. I just didn’t see any great benefit to switching to a GT. How do you find yours?
You get more for your money in the GT and with the seats down I can get two bikes in the back. There is acres of leg room in the back and the chassis is from a 7 series and very smooth, even with my 21" wheels. Its the most comfortable car I've ever been in, however, it is massive and I am looking to downsize soon.
The X5, will return 25mpg, on long runs you’ll see low 30’s (mpg) Their not without problem, certainly not a bed of roses running one, however find a good one and there good, I’ve had mine two years and very little by way of running costs to alarm! Where they do exceed is in driving, a typical steam roller in town and a terrier on the open roads, Opt for the 4.0d for refinement and balance of fun / mpg - not a good time of year to purchase as the winter premium now plays its part on forecourt values! As always, I’d favour getting the newest car possible, the F10 is accomplished and 15 plate will have you in a Lci model I changed from a F07 to E70, perhaps a backwards step though destinct differences in driver engagement, where the newer models are laden with drivers aids and distancing the driving experience! Though all round make for the more sensible purchase! I’d at least try a F07, there very underrated!
Cheers for all responses gents. Taking all the comments on board and after picking myself up off the floor from see the expected X5 MPG figures I went and bought a....... 3GT 335d Xdrive with professional Sat Nav and M Sport Plus Pack and few other options, so far run about about 3/4 of a tank and returning and average 38mpg with a whole mix of driving, urban, extra urban as well as being stuck in stop start traffic on the m25 for 50minutes this morning. There’s plenty of room for the kids in the back and plenty of leg room even for me when sat behind the drivers seat. Have to say I’m very impressed!!!!!
Cheers Kleynie! I went in to test drive another X5 and came out with the GT You might see me pottering about on it as my office is in Bridge Street, Staines.
