Well I got tempted by the dealers and they took back my F31 (preLCI) 335d and swapped me over to an F30 335d in Shadowline Spec. It was prebuilt and non-registered. Sitting in at the Immingham site since start of Jan and they needed 2 more sales to get their bonus before the 31st of Jan. So got 8k miles added to the PCP for not much money change and a decent dealer discount. So paying about the same but can drive it a lot more and get to enjoy things. Interesting to feel the difference, same engine but it seems someone has tinkered with the box in the 3 years, and this one seems a lot more intelligent and knows what to do even better than the previous one. The coasting mode in Eco took my by surprise as the old F31 never did that! Despite it supposedly being able to. Over three days commuting (~400 miles) it's done something like 48mpg at an average speed of 60+ according to the computers. It's mostly motorway and it just glides along. Impressed with the updated IDrive, it came with the Online Entertainment and that's been kind of interesting to deal with. Seems to work okay, even if it could do with 4G rather than just 3G connectivity. HK stereo is a step up, along with the MSport+ brakes. I though the standard 335d's were good, these are teeth jarringly sharp. Only downside is my old 17inch Winter alloys no longer fit!! Trying to convince the dealer to do a part exchange on a set of 18s but they don't seem to be biting... Have noticed a downside however, old car had Adaptive Suspension, Adaptive headlights, plus stop&go Cruise control. I miss the suspension already, 335 with non Msport is missing the firmness. F31 would enter bends nice and hard and you knew it would not roll, this one gives that little feeling of unease. On these dark nights on the back roads I miss the Adaptive lights too, High beam assist is nice, but not in the same league. LED lights are good, but must be even nicer with Adaptive. Cruise control I can live with the normal version. Also, no headlight washers?!? I thought it was mandatory with LED headlights? Same as Xenons? I presume they are self levelling as well? Still, it's a fun car to blast around it... I must behave for a few more miles until it's all nicely bedded in but it's damn hard to not press that sport+ button! Found my old car up for resale already if anyone want's a nice spec F31 335d in white with red leather. I can vouch that it's been looked after and I have a nice set of 17inch wheels that would fit it with winter tyres on... Obligatory pics, car needs a wash, but it's damn cold out and I'm not freezing my fingers off! Hi, Congrats on the new car! I'm getting: BMWLand - Error You do not have permission to view media within this album. When trying to view the pics... Kev
Pleased to hear that you got a good deal on the new F30 @madphysics , but I would be very reluctant to get rid of my adaptive suspension - it's just so good! For some reason I can't open your image links on my Mac?
Muppetry on my part.. Wrong setting on the album privacy selector... fixed now I think. As for the suspension, yes.. Problem was they couldn't find any other 335d with it in the prebuilt lists. frankly I think 335s should come as standard with it, as it's the only way to get proper sport feel on the that model given as it has to be xdrive. It was toss up between this care and a 330 with adaptive... in the end I was weak and couldn't drop the 50 or so hp... stupid me!
I can understand you opting for the 335d. I assume that it has the MSport suspension fitted, which will give a nice firm ride to handle that power? When I've browsed the classified ads, it does highlight how few cars have the adaptive suspension option, presumably because of the cost when new.
No the madness is the 335 comes with standard suspension. Can't do the MSport (for some reason) due to the xDrive. Wouldn't be a big deal if I'd not enjoyed the previous one with adaptive and spent most of the time when alone in it driving it in sport mode for the firmness.
Well I hope you get plenty of enjoyment driving it. Looking at the positive - it will be a very comfortable ride.
Nice! Believe it or not, headlight washers are now a cost option. They're also completely useless - I know!
I admit they are pretty pointless, apart from making you go though washer fluid like it was going out of fashion! Or for firing that bit of plastic into oncoming traffic, which the E90 used to do with style at times.
Just so I've got that right, the 335 comes with standard suspension because of the x drive but the adaptive suspension on the 335 can be set to sport?
I think I have headlight washers but have no idea how and when they work. "Badly" I hear some of you say... Do they they work in conjunction with windscreen washer?
Indeed. 335d M Sport xDrive has SE suspension, 335d M Sport with Adaptive is 10mm lower and can be set to Sport which stiffens it up considerably.
It's all the "extras" but with SE suspension A pain. I did notice some kits of the 335, B3 suspension at birdsauto, but it's costly! Seems you can't retrofit the adaptive either, or not officially. Mine's a PCP lease, so can't see me splashing out on it, will see how it goes and hold out for a G20 at the end of the lease.. Is still a beast of a car and I will fully enjoy all of the 300+ hours and world moving torques...
On my previous F10 (LCI, with HID headlamps) the washers worked automatically the first time the 'screen washer was used when the headlamps were on, then every 3rd time that the 'screen washers were used after that. They didn't work at all when the headlamps were off. At least they don't use quite as much fluid that way! Whenever the ignition was switched off the system reset so that the headlamp washers worked on the first screenwash again. I haven't got washers on my new G30, which has LED headlamps. It seems to be a quirk of the C & U Regs (I think, following an EU Reg) that washers are required with HID headlamps but not with LED ones. Washers are an optional (cost) extra on the G30 but I did not specify them!
