Just a heads up chaps that there might be a map update for your car. I've downloaded the 2021-1 Europe Next West maps and currently installing.
Our 2016 car has free map updates until its fifth birthday in April 21, so I had a go at downloading the new map today but have hit a massive snag, only got 11gb space left on the laptop so the download manager can't continue. Also as the largest usb stick we have is 1gb you can tell we don't buy new household electronics very often... Luckily at least we have 2020/2, as I have mentioned in another thread, when we bought the car last month, we asked the BMW dealer to check the car software (including maps) and update if needed. They found it was on original mapping (not unheard of) so installed the latest one for us which I thought was good, wonder if they would've bothered if I hadn't asked ?
Somebody needs to do a bit of digital house keeping. Just keep saying to yourself "I must put the rubbish in the trash can". It's either a steam powered laptop that you've got, or it's full of garbage! Also, if your Nav is the full Professional version, you'll likely need a 64 Gb memory stick as most downloads are just over 32 Gb.
It is a 2008 Macbook that is still soldiering on faultlessly. I back it up monthly to an external 1tb hard drive, and run a program called 'clean my mac' weekly to optimise it which saves a gb each time you run it, but it is just getting too full of photos now I suppose. The download manager instructions did advise the 64gb stick. I am not sure what the professional version of the nav is to be honest, how do you tell please Mieke.
For about the last 18 months or so the Europe maps have been split between East and West. Unpacked the Europe West Next maps take up 27gb space so should fit on a 32Gb memory stick which when formatted has about 29.8Gb available space.
Business Nav is similar - my system uses Europe Route (not Next) I use two 32GB USB memory sticks. One with Europe West and one with Europe East and can switch between them by inserting the appropriate USB and letting the car replace West with East and vice-versa. It sounded like a good idea - until I discovered that Bosna i Hercegovina was on neither of them.
I've just e-mailed my friend in Munich - he says he can supply 2021-1 maps on a USB for €18 including postage.
Easy to find free online + FSC code on ebay @£10 or use the software I have and get your own code I won't be bothering as they are still behind compared to google / apple maps etc
How long does the update take to install ? I presume it need the ignition to stay on, so easier to do when actually making a journey.
It takes about 40 minutes or so. I just sat there listening to Smooth Chill while the family squabbled in the house.
As has already been said, about 40 mins, but this doesn't need to be done in one go. Once the download has been activated, whenever the ignition is turned off, there will be a prompt to continue with the download when the engine is restarted. So you could complete the task in several short journeys. But I prefer to wait until I have a reasonably long journey so it completes the task in one go.
