Spuff could save thousands, and simply buy a trailer to tow behind the Macan or X3 or Hymer.....

Sorry to hear that Ian. Look after yourself and hope all goes to plan.

    I know!

I'm as confused as you are.

After messing around with the car seats, the Macan is really tight. The problem is the baby seat - it won't fit behind the drivers seat unless i have my knees around my face. And it only just fits behind the passenger seat, even though my partner is only 5'8". It's jammered in there and makes the front of the cabin uncomfortable as a result.

BUT, all the other things remain the same. It's a great car, which I love driving and has a sense of occasion.

I may end up doing nothing and keeping it, but also keeping my options open.

That makes sense, I was behind a nice looking blue Macan yesterday and although it looked good I can imagine struggling to comfortably fit my 10 month old son's car seat in the rear.

The big RR is a great car, not half as special as a Macan and all too common on the roads - but will swallow just about anything.

Prefer the grey one, big black RRs have been done to death (at least in W Yorks).

    Current:
    E85 Z4 3.0i Manual | Sterling Grey | Oregon red leather | Axe EX10 18s | Custom exhaust
    E65 730D Sport | Sterling Grey | Black leather
Toyota Landcruiser 90 SWB | Black

Exactly that. It's going to be fine for two kids in normal Stage II/III seats, but in a Stage I it's a disaster. Problem is, once we're out of the Stage I with the next one, we'll potentially have 2 x Stage II/III seats and 1 x Stage I. No chance.

I'd said the next car would be a 7-seater but I'm wondering whether the Rangey might work on the basis of the width of the back bench being able to take all the seats. Really need to spend a bit of time in the showroom.

I'm not sold on doing anything just yet as I think there's a lot to chose from - Full fat RR, Disco 5, SQ7, X5 or dare I say it, X7.

Agree on the black RR. I do like that grey one, understated. My other half spotted a metallic red one, which in some ways is completely wrong. But also so different that it could be right! :D

Duncan...I would check very closely that the boot space on a RR or even X5 is going to fit your needs. Having used both at work it always surprised me how little room there was in the back seats and even in the boot even with all the motorway police kit taken out.

Start putting in buggies etc you will soon eat into the useable space

Maybe my expectations were too high but I always felt that for the size of vehicle rear legroom and rear boot space with all the seats in use was a bit small.....show some serious interest and you might even get a dealer to let you have a demo for a day if you explain why you are thinking of one. Take it home and try the baby seats etc

Back home now with some time on my hands. Shame you re not a bit closer Dunc, I’d quite happily lend you the RRS for a day just so you can see for yourself if it would work or not.

The FFRR is an enticing prospect, I’d have one tomorrow but many have said that unless you really need the extra space the RRS does it all already. Clarkson said that the full fat is all the car you’d ever need but I’m not entirely convinced by that because chuckable it ain’t. Whilst the RRS is obviously not a sports car it’s surprisingly hoonable (in a ridiculous two ton SUV kind of way) and I’d likely miss that element if I went FFRR.

Whenever I've been in the back a RR that's been my impression, why is this so small, that and the impression it's about to roll over if cornered hard, to my mind a seriously blunt tool on the road....fix one thing and break another.....

Duncan, forget the RR - I've found the perfect solution for you. :)

Thanks for taking the time and glad to hear you're back home. Very kind of you to offer, Ian.

I thought they'd sorted the handling a bit more on the FFRR. My mate has had an 05 Supercharger V8 from new and it handles like a boat in comparison to anything I've had during that time. I do like the idea of wafting, but I also like a sporty drive when the opportunity arises.

I know everything's a compromise but I had (perhaps naiively) thought that with £50-60k burning a hole in the pocket, there would be less compromises needing making, but I'm not convinced the perfect car exists for what I'm after. Which I is why, unlike the Duncan of yesteryear, I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet and I'm still biding my time.

Now if ever there was a car which had a massive footprint and zero cabin space, it's the G Wagon!! I sat in one at the Frankfurt Motorshow 3yrs ago and couldn't believe how narrow it was back there.

TBH, I'm amazed at how little space anything has in the rear when you consider how much cars have grown over the last 20yrs or so. But then again, as safety improves with the vehicle itself, so it does with car seats and that's basically the problem. I remember being shocked at how little space I had in the E60 when my first daughter was born. I swear the car seat my baby is about to be placed in is bigger again.

    ******

And yes, I remember being crammed in the back of a 1970's Austin Maxi when I was a kid. No seatbelts until Dad drilled some straps through the chassis. Sure the car was smaller back then, but with no safety gear inside, it was palacial compared with today with all the gubbins.

Duncan, I seem to recall you've just sold a VW based camper.

Have you considered one of the VW, Ford Hyundai, etc 7/9 seat minibus things.

Take out some of the rear seats, which will leave loads of luggage room, loads of space for passengers, buggies, bikes, etc,

Elevated driving position, newer and no doubt more reliable than a 4 yr old RR, will cost much less and less depreciation ?

And you keep the current fleet !

Image didnt bother him with the Skoda Yeti, or VW Polo, or the VW camper ...and just what image does Dunc think he projects driving his mobile house brick (Hymer) down country lanes. He has the Macan and X1 for for image

Disco 5 out of all those! You and I have the same debate going on almost, well the Multimac solved that for me. Pre Multimac it was a Disco 4 or 5.

3rd row is great, but could you be putting up with that all the time? It works in the D5 as heaps of room but there is no way would I put up with it in the X5 or similar.

Now Multimac in a RRS.... ;)

Aye, for third row seats the D5 is the way to go. Supposedly one of the most usable in its class.. Mind you, the X7 has won some plaudits too!

Just reading this morning all the negative posts about reliability.

I know people will post to vent more so but one guy, his D5 has had 3 windscreen replacements because of the water ingress fault!

That’s really bad and off putting

Absolutely one things for sure all evidence suggests that Land Rover as a brand have a lot of improving to do on the reliability front, all surveys I've seen place them at the bottom.

Having said that owners seem to love them and buy another so the benefits of ownership must outweigh the issues and very high running costs.
