Hi All, used to own a estoril blue E46 M3 and what a machine it was! However times changed and I moved on but now I am in the position now of potentially buying a car I have always wanted ever since I heard the wail of the V10. I have seen one for sale with low miles and the BMW AUC warranty which I believe to be transferable ( if it wasn't for that I don't think I would even be considering it ) its in a lovely blue with extended leather inside and seems to have been well cared for so its ticking the correct boxes so far. It will only be used a few times a month by me so running costs in terms of fuel I don't really care about I know its not going to get me 30mpg!! My questions are around some preventative destruction work - While I presume BMW warranty would cover it if the rod bearings decided to grenade, I think id prefer to just eliminate that issue to begin with the car is at 51k if I was to take this to a specialist to replace rod bearings would that risk the warranty ? and as such would I just be better off running it and seeing what happens :/
Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you're after a beast of a car. If you are taking out the bmw comprehensive warranty then I wouldn't bother getting the bearing shells changed separately. That would surely cost a fair chunk of cash and imo would be a waste if you have a warranty in place. I don't know these engines, are they susceptible to rod bearing failure? You'll also soon come to realise
I remember the icon from the old forum I was on that too back in the day! Yeah what you have said makes sense in my mind and its what I thought as well, but indeed the S85 has the rod bearings issue just like the V8 motor in the M3 If I purchase the car believe me you will be begging to stop seeing pics
Welcome along, keep us updated on your potential purchase. Don't know when the M6 you've seen was built but according to Evolve they updated the design of the rod bearings in 2011 to address the premature wear issues. EDIT: Just checked, the S85 M6 was discontinued in 2010 before they changed the design https://www.evolveautomotive.com/servicing
Yep sadly so The one I am looking at is a 2007 and its the colour combo I like blue with white leather.. ( what could go wrong with a 2 year old toddler.. )
take advantage of the BMW AUC warranty and then look at taking out BMW insured warranty when the AUC warranty expires. lt wont be cheap but then repairing the motor in a V 10 M6 wont be cheap either
Excuse my ignorance I'm buying this privately and the owner will transfer the warranty to me, can I simply not keep this going or does it not work like that ?
Assuming that this is the BMW extended warranty, the policy document (page 33) has a transfer of warranty to the new owner. But only for annual policies. Click on thumbnail below.
AUC warranty will transfer with the car. I did this when I bought my M5 Touring privately in 2016. I have then kept the warranty going and pay a monthly cost of £89 a month including breakdown cover for the comprehensive warranty that includes wear and tear. If you do it monthly then the cost does not increase when you go over 60,000 miles it stays the same until you cancel the warranty. Cheers and enjoy it. My touring is on 62k and no rod b earring problems. I have had about £5,000 worth of warranty work done on it which had been helpful Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Chose very carefully befoe committing to buy,, they're wallet busting if things start to go wrong, hugely complex machines, much more so than the ordinary 'cooking' version like my e60 530i. Take your time, read everything you can find re repair costs, or even parts - much more than as i said. Check out YT for owners' video reports etc too. Good luck with the hunt.

Yep I just found a great car on Auto Trader. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201907069784244?atmobcid=soc3 Download the app to find your perfect car. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...onsumersearch&referrer=utm_source=App%20Share That's what I'm looking at
Lovely colour, only 51k miles in 12 years Wonder if the seller is aware that it's subject to an outstanding recall: As the recall dates back to 2012 it's likely that it hasn't been serviced at a main dealer since this date at least.

I can't believe I misread you post and thought you were going for an M5 - in my defence the important oily/mechanicals will be the same.... Note to self , pages more carefully! That looks a lovely example, keep us updated on how the 'possible probable ] deal goes.
Does look rather nice in that colour. Same colour seats as mine which are not practical with two young kids like I have. Get it bought and enjoy it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks all The power of positivity helps Just been on the reddish motorsport website and they charge around 2.2k to do the rod bearings with BMW parts so thats a blessing I may do, as ill consider asking them to change the oil and do a sample not as part of service history but I always feel an oil change when getting a car from someone is never a bad thing.
Seems a bit expensive. I would expect to pay under £1500 in the South East Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
